The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) has given its approval to Solar Power Network (SPN) to proceed with its planned 10MW of solar panel installations on the rooftops of 35 southwest Ontario companies. The program sees the Ontario companies leasing their roof space to SPN, which then installs a 250kW solar array and allows for the renewable electricity the system produces to be fed back into the grid.
"We are very pleased with OPA's announcement that allows SPN to move forward with our 35 new partnerships with local business who are looking to feed energy back into the grid, while creating value from their unused rooftop space," says Peter Goodman,CEO of Solar Power Network. "With Germany's commitment to give up nuclear energy by 2022 in favor of increasing renewable sources of electricity, we are seeing encouraging signs of a shift in the way Ontario businesses think about sustainability and renewable energy."
SPN installs the solar panels at a 5° angle, which the company states uses 50% less square footage compared to the industry standard of 30°to 35°.SPN additionally notes that its method results in 25% of the structural load compared to the panels placed at a higher angle.
SPN looks to their 35 new contracts as a jumping off point for their planned CAN$400 million investment for 90MW of power through 360 unused rooftops, which they plan to begin looking into in the near future.
